Solar cooking is cooking with the natural heat of the sun, and solar cookers can be made in several different ways. One way is to use thin, black metal pans, bowls, or containers that will attract the heat from the sun and quickly transfer that heat to the food for cooking. Thin plastic cooking bags and glass or plastic covers create a greenhouse effect, which allows the sun’s heat to build and intensify for cooking. Reflectors are frequently used for solar cooking because they can focus more sunlight onto the cooking vessel. Many solar cookers are made with cardboard and aluminum foil, and the most popular of these is a solar box cooker. If your boxes have flaps on them for the tops, cut them off or fold them to the inside. Glue aluminum foil to the inside of each box, covering all sides and the bottom.
