Below are a few ways to set up a tarp tent. Purchase a tarp, from the local hardware store or a camping store. Make sure the tarp is big enough to cover your body. For backpacking purposes the lighter the tarp, the better. The availability of trees at your location will determine how you set up your tarp tent. If there are trees available, find two and stretch a length of rope between them. Stretch your rope between the trees about 4 feet off the ground. The easiest tarp tent to create is an A-frame. Take your tarp and drape it so that half falls on each end of your rope or twine. To secure the tarp to the ground you will need to find some pebbles, small pieces of wood or pinecones.
