How Do You Make A Topographic Map From Wood?

0

Making a three-dimensional representation of a contour map in wood is an interesting way to merge the disciplines of art, science and carpentry. A contour map is cluttered with contour lines representing levels of elevation above sea level. Using a floating router system, you can transfer these two dimensional lines to a carved block of wood to show the contour of the topography in a three-dimensional manner. Cut from the contour map the section you are going to represent in the wood block. Stack the ΒΌ-inch particle board panels on top of each other and tape the map segment to the top panel. Place the wood block in the cutting area. Rout out the entire perimeter of the map area up to the highest elevation contour line with a broad router bit. Keep the guide needle a few inches from the highest elevation contour line. Use incrementally decreasing router bit diameters the closer you get to the high elevation contour line. With the smallest bit, follow the contour line with the guide need
