Wind vanes are also referred to as weather vanes, since they each use the wind to move it. They are placed on the top of a roof or barn and used for centuries by farmers to catch the wind on either side, S, W, E, N to determine the way the wind is blowing to determine what weather to expect according to the direction of the wind. Weather vanes are now found on tops of buildings as elaborate or simple depending on the taste of the homeowner. Small and simple hand held wind blowers are also found sit on lawns of homes, or attached to a carriage, for babies to watch as the wind makes them turn. • Cut a slot in each end of the drinking straw. • Use the thin card to make two triangles, and insert them into the slots in the drinking straw. Glue the triangles in place. • Stick a pin through the straw into the pencil eraser. Make sure that the straw swings freely. • Support the pencil in the yoghurt pot or drinks cup.
