Making African masks combines both art and history while learning about African culture. Begin by examining various African masks to see the designs, expressions and colors used. Masks were commonly made to represent spirit beings and departed ancestors, and they were worn during ceremonies by performers. Recycled materials and a few craft supplies can be turned into realistic masks that your kids will be proud to wear. Draw the outline of a face on a piece of cardboard. Cut out the shape with a pair of scissors, and then cut out the eye holes or slits. Cut out pieces of cardboard to use for the nose, ears and mouth. Empty paper towel rolls or toilet paper rolls can be used by cutting the roll in half lengthwise and then opening it up flat or using it as a half circle.
