Oil lamps are essentially candles without the wax except that they can burn longer, you do not have to clean up any melted substances when the flame goes out and you can reuse them as often as you want. These lamps are ideal when you want to create a distinctive looking light source because you can use any type of glass vessel, such as an olive oil bottle, and simply add a few supplies to create your own oil lamp. Drill a small hole through the bottle's metal lid. You can also use a sharp object, such as the end of a compass, by twisting the pointy tip into the lid to punch the opening, but take care not to injure your hand in the process. Cut a length of 100 percent cotton string so that it is a little longer than the length of the bottle with the lid on. An all-cotton wick will emit no harmful or smelly fumes when it is burning.
