As our landfills become engorged with garbage that will never compost, many people are beginning to use their imaginations to recycle old items they formerly threw away. Appliances are difficult to recycle, but you can find alternatives tossing them out. For example, you can make an ottoman from an old washing machine. Remove the drum from the inside of the washing machine with a handsaw. Scrub the drum with a wire brush and let it dry. Apply metal polish. Attach four wheels to the eyelets on the bottom of the drum. Use the top from a can of paint to make the seat of the ottoman, or cut a piece of wood to fit over the top. Glue a thick piece of foam to fit the top and cover it with fabric. Sew a fabric strip around the edge of the seat and place the finished seat over the top of the drum. Make a large cocktail table ottoman using the entire machine. Pull out the drum and any other parts that might move around when you tip the washing machine over on its side. You can make a matching ot
