How Do You Make Authentic Refried Beans?
You know those $1.50 cans of refried beans that simply do not have a ton of flavor? Why bother when you can make your own, flavorful healthy refried beans? This recipe is adjustable with lots of options to customize them to your own personal taste. This recipe freezes well. In a large saucepan over medium heat add your oil or lard. Add your chopped onions and saute until translucent. Add the minced hot peppers of choice, and if using garlic (I do) add at this point as well. Continue to cook over medium heat until onions just start to brown. Rinse one can of red and one can of black beans. Add all four cans of beans to your saucepan. At this point you will also add any other optional ingredient (one small can of green chilies or the chipotles with adobo) and 1/2 bottle of beer. Stir well. Turn up the heat to a boil, stirring constantly. Reduce heat. Simmer for one hour, adding remaining beer as needed. You do not want your beans to dry out. Remove from heat. Using a potato masher, hand
