Because this recipe calls for homemade caramel, the process for making these pretzels can be long, but the result is worth the extra work. Line a cookie sheet with wax paper and set aside. Put butter, brown sugar, corn syrup, condensed milk and salt into a saucepan over medium-low heat. Slowly bring it to a boil. Using a candy thermometer, monitor the syrup until it reaches the soft-ball stage (235 to 245 degrees Fahrenheit). Remove the caramel from the heat. Dip the pretzel rods in the caramel, covering about 3/4 of each stick (leave one end uncoated to use as a handle). Use a rubber spatula to spread the caramel onto each rod, if necessary.
