Mitre one edge of all four plaques to 45 degrees. Attach two plaques together for each piece using wood glue. Allow to dry. Reinforce the glued edges by hammering in finishing nails to the seam. Sand off any rough edges of the wood. Apply two coats of paint to the plaques. Allow to dry for 25 minutes. Use a lighter shade of the paint to paint vertical strokes on the wood. Let the paint dry and then paint horizontal strokes on the wood to give a criss cross pattern. Apply a clear polyurethane stain to the wood. Let the stain dry.
