As a craft project, Japanese lanterns are as easy to make and inexpensive as they are beautiful. However, a delicate paper craft like this requires an adhesive that’s both strong and light. You can make just such a glue using flour and water and a simple cooking process. Here’s how to make wheat paste glue for your lanterns. Place two cups of water on the stove to boil at medium heat. Measure 6 tbsp. of flour into a bowl. Mix just enough cold water into the flour to make a solution that can be poured. Stir well, making sure that the flour is well mixed with the water and no lumps of dry, unmixed flour are hiding in the mixture. If you’re having trouble with this, add a little more cold water. Add the flour mixture to the water on the stove once it has reached a boil. Pour slowly and carefully while stirring to avoid any lumping or cooking of the flour mixture (as in making dumplings).
