Start by melting the butter or shortening, and the chocolate over very low heat. Once melted, stir to combine and remove from heat. Add the salt, milk, and vanilla. Slowly add the powdered sugar, one cup at a time until completely mixed in. Beat by hand or an electric mixer until of spreading consistency. If too thick, add more milk, a tablespoon at a time. At this point you can mix in the chopped walnuts, if desired. Use immediately, or store covered in the refrigerator. For easier spreading, bring back to room temperature before using the chocolate frosting to frost your creation.
