The Sony PlayStation 3 (PS3) is a video game console that also doubles as a DVD movie player. DVD discs are categorized into one of eight regions, meaning that a DVD from one area will not play on DVD players from other areas. For example, American and Canadian DVDs are categorized as Region 1 DVDs, and Region 2 covers DVD discs in Japan, South Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Greenland. The region specification for DVDs is used as a tool against piracy. A Sony PS3 unit sold in the United States is set up to play only Region 1 DVDs.
