How Do You Make Savannah Sweet Potato Casserole?
I’m from Savannah and my mother and my grandmother have made this dish at Thanksgiving every year. It has been passed down and is the best recipe for Sweet Potato Casserle you’ll ever have! Roast the sweet potatoes or boil them, whichever you choose. I usually peel and boil because it’s easier. My mom says it’s more flavorful if you roast them in the oven. Either way, you’ll need to cook them first and then mash them as your first step. Mix the potatoes, butter, vanilla, eggs, milk and sugar into a large mixing bowl. I use a blender to make it really smoothe, but a whisk will sometimes work as well if you don’t have a blender. Pour your mixture into the 9 x 13 pan. I spray the bottom with a litte bit of butter flavored PAM just so it doesn’t stick, but it’s not necessary. Now, prepare your topping in a separate bowl. Mix all parts together and then sprinkle with your hands on top of the mixture. Place in the oven and bake 25 minutes at 350 degrees. You’re done!! Enjoy.
