A swag refers to a window treatment that is draped or looped over the curtain rod rather than secured by tabs or a rod pocket. Swag window treatments allow the decorator more freedom when it comes to placing it, since it is loose and can be tied in decorative knots, shortened or lengthened or used to dress up existing panels. Swag window treatments can be purchased, but are very simply made since they only require a straight seam with no tucks or gathers to intimidate a novice sewer. Determine how long you would like your swag to be by measuring the window it will be over. Measure along the top and down both sides (if you want the swag to hang on both sides; if it will hang on one side only, measure only that side).
