How Do You Measure Using A Micrometer Screw Gauge?

0

A micrometer is used to make highly accurate measurements, usually in situation where accuracy can be a problem. Sphere diameters, channel depths and inside and outside diameters for tubing are just a few examples. The screw gauge micrometer uses a spindle that is advanced and retracted by turning the screw in the handle. The threads of the screw are precisely machined so that the distance it moves with every turn correlates to the scale of the micrometer. Retract the screw gauge slightly more the object you are measuring. Slip the screw gauge into or around the object you are measuring, depending on the type of gauge you are using. Advance the screw gauge just until the object will not slip. Do not overtighten. Lock the gauge in place. Most micrometers will have either a thumb wheel or thumb lever locking mechanism on the handle. Remove the micrometer and read the measurement.
