The pituitary secretes eight hormones. They can be easily memorized using a simple trick. The anterior pituitary gland (adenohypophysis; pars distalis) sythesizes and secretes six hormones: Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH), Lutenizing hormone (LH), Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), Prolactin (PRL), and Growth hormone (GH). These can be remembered by using the acronym “FLAT PeG,” assigning a letter to each of the hormones from the anterior pituitary. (The “e” in the acronym stands for “endorphins” which are neurotransmitters produced by the pituitary.) The posterior pituitary gland (neurohypophysis, pars nervosa) secretes two hormones: Oxytocin (OT) and Antidiuretic hormone (ADH). ADH is also called AVP or Vasopressin.
