How do you mix mortar by hand?
Mortar usually comes in large paper sacks that weigh around 80 lbs. The cement and sand mixture is most commonly used in applying stucco to the exterior of a building and for doing brick work. The following method works best for mixing mortar on a scrap piece of plywood. It can also be used to mix mortar in a wheelbarrow. Place the bag of mortar mix on an old scrap piece of plywood that is at least three feet by three feet square. Break the bag open with a long handled shovel. You can cut the bag right across the middle with the point of the shovel. Turn the bag over and empty the contents. Use the shovel to shape the gray powder mixture into the shape of a crater, just like the kind that you might find at the top of a volcano. Make sure all sides are even, because you will want to fill the crater with water.
