Collective bargaining with a union allows for the chance to gain better benefits with your employer. Some of the improved benefits include improved pay, longevity remuneration, time off, and health care benefits. Step 1 Gain the input of union members. Although only a select few will be negotiating the union contract, you should make sure to get input from all union members. Make sure to have a mechanism for people to give their opinions and state their preferences before the negotiations start. Your negotiation must represent the needs and desires of all the union members to the best of your ability. Step 2 Study negotiating tactics. The union representatives should prep themselves with negotiating skills through reading material on negotiation or attending a seminar to teach them negotiating tactics.
