How Do You Obtain Military Records & Medals?
Military service members often earn medals and ribbons through their service in specific military operations. Although most of those awards are presented during service, it is possible that some may not be awarded until after separation from the military. In addition, veterans may become disabled or die before receiving all of their earned awards. If you are a family member of such a veteran, you still can obtain that service member’s medals and ribbons. Locate the member’s DD Form 214, or Report of Separation form. If it is not available, request the form by completing an SF 180, the Location of Military Records Form. This document can be downloaded from the National Archives website as listed in the resources below. You should provide as much information about the member’s service as possible, including the branch of service, Social Security number, place of birth, time of service and place of death (if applicable). If the service member is disabled or deceased, you also should provi
