How Do You Overcome A Dysfunctional Family?
Not all of us are fortunate enough to grow up in the perfect family. There are varying levels of dysfunction in most families but for some of us the dysfunction is so severe that it has long lasting effects well into our adulthoods and adult relationships. There are ways to overcome the dysfunction. We choose our friends, we choose our lovers, but we do not choose our family of origin. Unfortunately the family we are born into shapes our lives tremendously. A secure happy child grows up to be a secure happy adult. For those of us with severely dysfunctional families we do not have the luxury of the warm fuzzy feelings others have when we think of our childhoods and our relationships with our families. Many times we carry the dysfunction into our adult lives choosing partners and friends who are like our families or treat us as they did.
