How Do You Paint A Melamine Shelf?
Melamine is a hard outer coating that is often applied to particle board. The smooth veneer of melamine makes it a challenging surface to paint. With proper preparation, however, it is possible to paint melamine surfaces successfully. If you have an old melamine shelf in need of a new coat of paint, take it down and spend a short time preparing the surface. Once this is done, painting the surface is simple. Remove the shelf from the wall, if necessary. Carry the shelf to a well-ventilated work area. Place a plastic tarp on the floor to protect the area. Set the shelf on the tarp. Put on a pair of gloves. Mix 1/2 cup of trisodium phosphate with 2 gallons of warm water in a bucket. Wash the shelf with the cleaning mixture. Rinse the shelf and allow it to dry completely before proceeding. Sand the shelf’s surface with 80-grit sandpaper.
