I repainted the stucco exterior walls of my house using latex paint. The existing paint was latex-based and was faded and ‘chalky’. The house was only a few years old but it looked like the paint was watered down and applied with a spray gun. I decided to repaint the house myself with a roller and with the help of a few tips provided by an ‘old painter’ friend of mine. Spray the walls with a one cup of bleach per gallon of water solution using a pump sprayer. Use a pressure washer to get rid of mildew and dirt and help remove the ‘chalky’ layer of old paint. You can feel the ‘chalk’ by rubbing your hand on the painted surface. Allow the walls to dry completely. Using a medium nap roller and extension pole, apply a coat of sealer/primer. This locks the old paint in place and provides a good surface for the new paint. Apply a coat of exterior latex paint using a heavy nap roller and extension pole.
