How Do You Paint Over Grooved Paneling?
Grooved paneling is a feature found in older homes, basements and other rooms typically used for leisure or infrequent use. This material lends itself well to inexpensive construction and simple maintenance, yet lacks the aesthetic appeal most homeowners desire. Painting over the grooved paneling is an economical way to cover up the actual paneling, and when executed well, looks much better than the unfinished material. Remove all of the furniture, electrical outlet covers and window treatments from the paneled room before painting. Put down a drop cloth on the floor to catch any drips or splatters. Apply one coat of primer paint, like Kilz, to provide a substantial base coat for the actual paint to adhere. This primer coating also seals the grooved paneling. Brush or roll on a coat of paint over the primer coat once it has dried. Pay careful attention to work the paint into the paneling grooves. Let this coat dry and determine whether a second coat will finish the project.
