You must try different things until you find something that matches the pattern. Chip the plaster out in the damaged area to make smooth even edges for the repair. Slip some mesh screen inside the hole and staple it to the studs. You can use screening meant for screen porches. This will give the plaster something to hold on to. Wet around the hole to dampen the plaster and help it adhere to the new plaster. Spread a layer of plaster over the mesh and partially fill the hole. Spread it with a small trowel.
