Performing the Heimlich Maneuver can be difficult when dealing with an unconscious victim. These steps will allow you to help the person until medical personnel arrives. Remember to remain calm and perform all steps thoroughly. Step 1 Lay the victim on their back. Tilt the head back and check for breathing. Have someone call 911. Step 2 If there is any visible obstruction, remove it. Open the mouth while holding the tongue and lower jaw. Bend your forefinger into a hook shape and sweep it around the mouth. Try to bring the object up into the mouth cavity. Step 3 If you are unable to remove the obstruction, straddle the victim. Take the heel of your hand and place it above the belly button.
