Peonies are old-fashioned favorites that are lovely to look at and even lovelier to smell. These beauties have an amazing lifespan, sometimes living fifty years or longer. They are generally hardy and require very little attention once planted. Many gardeners choose to plant a bare root peony rather than one that has been potted because they are less expensive and are available in a wider range of colors. Soak the peony tubers in water for two to four hours before you are ready to plant them. This will replace any moisture that may have been lost during shipment. Plant bare root peonies in early fall, just as the leaves begin to change colors. Tubers that are planted in spring will not grow off as well because they will have to endure the heat of summer with an undeveloped root system.
