Desert gardens can be things of beauty, or they can be disastrous cemeteries for many dead plants. Following these simple steps will give you a beautiful, lasting, hardy and drought-tolerant garden. Check the requirements for each of your native plants. Does it need to be in full sunlight, partial shade or full shade? Do the seeds need to be sown above the soil or do they need to be covered with soil (many native plants can only germinate when exposed to sunlight; others must be covered with a light layer of soil.) Next, check the water requirements of each plant. Some may require more water than others. Plant those requiring more water closer to the house or water source. Decide which plants will look well together when mature. Mix broad leaf plants with slender-leafed taller pants. Vary colors. Plant herbs under the roses.
