How Do You Plant Green Onion Bulbs?
If you are an onion lover, set aside a small patch in your garden or flower bed to grow these plants. Onions mature quickly, and small and large varieties can grow in the same patch. Onions can withstand light nighttime frost, and onion bulbs can be planted outdoors when the daytime temperatures reach about 48 degrees. Purchase bulbs at a greenhouse or garden center. Choose bulbs that look like small marbles. Don’t purchase bulbs that are soft or that have begun to sprout. If you aren’t ready to plant the bulbs, store them in a cool, dry place. If they are kept dry, they should last about three weeks. Choose a sunny spot for your onion bulbs, and prepare the soil for planting. Hoe out any weeds and work some compost or manure into the top of the soil. Divide the bulbs into two piles. Put bulbs larger than a dime in one pile.
