How Do You Plant Red Onion Bulbs?

0

People have been using onions as a source of food since 5000 B.C. Though they make us weepy when we cut them, they are still our favorite flavoring ingredient when we cook. Onions may be grown from sets (bulbs), transplants or seeds. A good cold-weather crop, onion sets can be planted outside when temperatures are consistently around 48 degrees Fahrenheit. They require adequate soil moisture and cool temperatures. Choose a place in your garden that gets at least six hours of full sun every day. Dig the soil to 18 inches deep, breaking up any large clods of dirt and removing any rocks or other debris. Work fertilizer into the soil, being sure that it is mixed in well. Tamp the soil with your feet to make it firm. Create rows that are at least one foot apart. The bulbs will be planted in these rows, four inches to six inches apart. Use a trowel to dig a hole about one-inch deep and drop in a bulb, pointed side up. Cover lightly with soil, leaving the very tip of the bulb showing through.
