How Do You Potty Train An Older, Adult Dog?
An adult dog can be a great choice for a first time dog owner. An even better choice is to rescue a dog from a shelter. Unfortunately, many times these dogs aren’t fully housebroken. What to do? Potty training an adult dog is actually much easier than potty training a puppy. An adult dog has better bladder control and is calmer and more receptive to instruction than a puppy. Upon bringing your dog home you should immediately show the dog the place outside where you want it to go potty. Leash the dog and wait in the potty spot that you have chosen until the dog goes. When the dog finally goes praise it like crazy, but not so crazy that it cuts off in midstream because you scared it. When it is done you should give it a treat. It is important to verbally praise it during elimination. Take the dog inside and show it the crate. Throw some treats in there and a toy or two. Make it fun and a nice place to be. This crate is supposed to be a den for the dog so you should put some old towels on
