I am thinking about purchasing a key on Ebay and want to program it once it is cut. This is a transponder key not the remote. A: A programmer is needed to program the keys, but it is not true that only the Toyota dealer has the technology. Any large town will have a dedicated automotive locksmith with the capability, and many rural 1 man operations (such as myself) also are quite capable or programming the keys. Compare prices dealer vs locksmith…the dealer IS sometimes cheaper if you don’t have to drive to another city.
