Programming Genie garage door remotes will depend upon the model and age of your garage door opener. Most newer models use a smart button to program the remotes. Older garage door openers have a line of white switches that must match. Look at the back of your garage door opener head to see which type of programming system your opener uses. Purchase remotes from home improvement centers or garage door dealers. Place a stepladder under the Genie garage door opener power head and locate the dip switches on the back of the power head. Nine switches in a row are set to different settings. Write the setting of each dip switch on a piece of paper. Remove the battery cover from the remote control.
