However, pruning a young Austrian pine can train its branches to grow in a particular shape. The Austrian pine will need to be pruned when it is first planted in order to re-balance the tree’s limbs and roots. Cut the central leader, above a bud, to around 10 inches. The leader is the branch that grows straight up and is located at the top center of the tree. Cut the branches beside the central leader until they are 5 inches shorter than the leader. Keep in mind the shape you want the finished tree to be in–pyramid. Cut the branches on both sides of the tree so they are a few inches longer than the branches above.
