Pulling up stained and worn carpet is a difficult task. On the other hand, exposing and polishing a beautiful concrete floor can add character to your home. If you currently have carpet on top of a concrete subfloor in your home, you may be able to remove the carpet and polish your concrete for a dramatic effect. Following a few simple steps will help you get started. Find a corner from which to begin pulling up the carpet. Use pliers to help release the carpet from the tack strip beneath. Cut the carpet in parallel 3 or 4 foot lengths. Cutting the carpet will make it easier to remove the carpet and move it from the room. To keep the utility knife sharp and protect the concrete beneath, pull the carpet up slightly while cutting it. Use the pliers or mineral spirits to remove any staples or glue used to adhere the carpet padding to the concrete floor.
