Residential social workers provide services to clients in a variety for residential settings, such as shelters for the homeless and battered women, group homes for the mentally disabled, halfway houses and residential treatment facilities. They provide a variety of services, including group and individual counseling, referrals to various community resources and assistance and training in daily life skills. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment opportunities for social workers are expected to grow more than the average for other types of jobs until the year 2018. Earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in social work from an accredited college or university. This generally takes four years of study.
