Once you get the hang of it, it is very easy to read a set of English vernier calipers. By knowing what to look for and what each indicator means, you can quickly and accurately measure parts in a machine shop environment. These calipers are very cost-effective and can be used in many different types of environments, as well as on all different kinds of materials from steel to plastic, and can be a valuable tool for a machinist or even an engineer. Close the verniers to make sure that the slide marker lines up with the zero on the fixed slide. This will assure that you are getting an accurate reading. Check for gaps between the two main blades, as you want there to be no gaps when the calipers are reading zero. If the verniers are not reading zero and there is a gap between the blades, clean them thoroughly and recheck for a gap.
