How Do You Read Micrometers & Calipers On Steel Tubes?
Measuring steel tubes can be done in several ways. In a manufacturing environment, calipers and micrometers are the best ways to measure the diameter of a steel tube accurately. By first making sure the calipers and micrometers are clean of debris on their measuring surfaces, you can use them for a quick, definitive measurement. Calibrate your calipers to make sure they are measuring accurately. Open and close them a few times to make sure they repeat to zero when they are fully closed. You may have to wipe the faces of the measuring blades to remove debris to get the correct readings. Open the jaws of the caliper by placing your right thumb on the thumb-wheel and pulling it to the right. Since calipers should be stored with their jaws closed, you must open them to measure a steel tube. Open them wide enough to fit the pipe being measured but use a different, larger set if you need to go to the end of the slide to measure the diameter of the steel tube.
