How Do You Recognize Bulimia Risk Factors?
Bulimia was first described in 1979 by Professor Gerald Russell while working with patients in London who battled this eating disorder. A year later, the American Psychiatric Association decided to recognize bulimia as a psychiatric disorder. While the binging and purging seems to revolve around food, bulimia actually points to deep psychological issues and intense feelings of living out of control. Many risk factors are associated with bulimia. People who meet some or all of the risk factors are more susceptible to bulimia and other eating disorders but may not actually suffer from bulimia. Keep an eye on those who live very active and athletic lives, particularly those involved in dancing, modeling, gymnastics, wrestling, boxing and other activities that rely on a person’s appearance.
