Most states will let you reuse your old car’s license plates as long as they’re in good shape, and it can save you a few bucks on your new car’s registration. When you sell or trade-in your used car, remember to take the license plates off and keep them. When it comes time to register your new vehicle, bring your old license plates with you to the DMV and ask if your state allows you to reuse them. Most states do. If they allow it, they will check the license plate number and make sure the previous owner is the same as the new owner or co-owner. If so, they should let you transfer the plates without a problem.
