Gel coats act as paint, forming a protective layer for the fiberglass. Over time the gel coat on fiberglass baptisteries can fade and discolor. When this happens, the only way to revive the baptistery is to refinish it with a fresh coat of gel coat. All gel coat materials can be found at your local marine supply store. Drain the water from the baptistery using an electric water pump. Clean the surface with a mild detergent, using a scrub brush. Remove any dirt or other residue. Put on a respirator and sand the entire baptistery with a palm sander and 200-grit sandpaper. Scuff the surface until it’s completely dull and smooth.
