Mineral spirits is a low-odor petroleum distillate that is a pure-grade solvent. It is less combustible than turpentine or other solvents, making it a favorite for removing varnishes. Kitchen cabinets are finished with a layer of polyurethane or varnish, and when deciding to refinish your kitchen cabinets, consider using mineral spirits. Wet a cloth with mineral spirits. Rub it onto the kitchen cabinet surface in the direction of the wood grain. Repeat a few times, using a clean side of the cloth each time. This will remove some of the grease and varnish from the cabinet's surface. Use a dry cloth and wipe away any debris. Take a piece of fine sandpaper and sand the cabinet surface, lightly, in the direction of the wood grain. Sand the entire surface, making sure to get into all the grooves of the woodwork. Wipe away the dust with a cloth. Open the can of stain using your flathead screwdriver to pry it open. Next, take your painter's stick and gently mix the stain from the bottom. ... more
