Refinishing a hardwood floor is the process of taking off the previous finish and replacing it with new stain and polyurethane. The old finish is removed by sanding, which takes off the whole top layer of the floorboards, allowing the new stain to soak into the wood. Too much sanding can ruin a floor, so don’t undertake this project until it’s absolutely necessary based on the wear of the floor, and then sand no more than necessary to get the surface down to bare wood. Load the roughest-abrasion sandpaper into the drum sander. Sand the floor with it, running the machine at a diagonal direction to the floorboards. Work your way over the whole floor, taking up the top layer of the finish and starting to expose the wood. Pick up the dust with your vacuum cleaner floor attachment. Set up the sander with the next-roughest abrasion level of sandpaper. Sand it again, going in the opposite diagonal direction as before.
