Wooden tops peel and crack if not properly protected, and iron bases will rust when exposed to rain and snow. To keep it looking its best, strip off any existing paint from the wooden table top, remove rust from the base and add protective coats to preserve their finishes. Move the furniture into the middle of your driveway or yard. Using the highest pressure setting on your hose nozzle, spray your furniture to remove any cobwebs and debris. Allow the furniture to dry. Sand the wooden table top using medium-grit sandpaper. To work more quickly use a palm sander, available at most home improvement centers. Remove all of the previous paint or sealant down to the bare wood of the table top. Brush rusted parts of the iron base with steel wool until the rust begins to flake off.
