Nothing can turn a smooth-running home project into a time-consuming frustration like a stripped hex screw. Most methods employed by the novice only make matters worse. But the task becomes easier if you follow the same steps as professionals with years of experience removing stripped hex screws. Spray a heavy dose of the liquid penetrant all over the area where the screw enters the material in which it is stuck. Let the penetrant sink in for at least 15 minutes. Use the metal file and work aggressively on the rounded edges of the head of the screw to reshape them into straight edges. This will remove some metal and may effectively make the head of the hex screw a size smaller. Find a socket that will almost, but not quite, fit over the squared-off head of the hex screw, align it properly, and tap it onto the screw with a ball-peen hammer.
