Step 1 Close the sash window and use a drill to unscrew the four to six screws holding the aluminum window to the rough frame at the top and sides of the window jamb. Slide the sash window up and use the drill to unscrew the lower mounting screws on the sides and bottom of the frame jamb. Step 2 Run a box-cutter blade around the interior and exterior line of the window frame to cut through any old layers of paint or caulking that hold the window in place. Step 3 Grasp the window at the middle sash and jiggle the frame gently to see if it loosens. If there is some play, keep jiggling back and forth to loosen the frame more.
