I am writing this as a part of another article – How to modify a vacuum advance unit. When I went to a local parts store and tried to by a vacuum advance for an early Lucas distributor, I was told that the unit was solidly mounted to the distributor and that I would have to buy the whole distributor. I knew this was a bunch of bunk, so I set off looking for ways to modify different advance units to fit different applications. Removing the unit is the first step. Disconnect the battery and remove the distributor cap. Observe as to where the rotor is pointing and make alignment marks on the engine and the distributor body. This will ensure that the distributor will be closely aligned to the correct time when replaced. Loosen the distributor clamp at the engine block and pull the distributor out.
