Formica countertops get burn marks from several household sources. Ashtrays could prevent many of them. Bathroom counters are burned by curling irons and other heated hair care appliances. A kitchen counter sometimes gets burns from cooking, but it's also the chosen surface for repairs and crafting with items such as soldering irons and hot glue guns. Most of the burns are merely stains that don't compromise the Formica, but they are unsightly. Clean burn stains off Formica to restore luster to your countertop. Step 1 Clean the surface of the burned section of Formica with dish soap and a soft cloth. Clear away any sticky residue left by the burn. Step 2 Spread whitening toothpaste over the burn stain and let stand for 30 minutes. Scrub the area with a nylon scrubber. Clean the spot with a soft cloth.
