Exposure to cigarette smoke can quickly give your curtains a yellowish tint. Not only are nicotine stains unsightly, cigarette smoke also leaves behind an acrid, stale odor that is not easily removed with standard detergents. With a few simple steps you can remove both nicotine stains and the odor, leaving your curtains or blinds clean and fresh. Step 1 Mix 1 qt. of warm water, 1/2 tsp. of liquid laundry detergent and 1 tbsp. of white vinegar to remove nicotine stains from curtains made from rayon, nylon polyester or acrylic fabrics. Soak the curtains in the solution for 30 minutes, stirring the water every few minutes, and rinse with warm water. If any nicotine stains remain, rub the curtains gently with alcohol and a soft cloth. After cleaning, wash your curtains as normal, selecting the delicate cycle on your washing machine and hanging them to dry.
