Even the most careful painter is bound to end up with paint on clothing or upholstery at some point. Removing a paint stain from fabric is possible regardless of whether the paint is oil or latex based. You can even remove old and dried paint stains from fabric with the right process. Clear away any excess paint by scraping or toweling it off. To scrape, use a blunt edged knife or piece of cardboard. Another option is to use a towel to blot the excess away. Place a small amount of turpentine on a sponge and blot the paint-stained area. The paint comes out of the fabric and leaves the oily residue of the turpentine solvent behind. Add 1 teaspoon mild detergent to 1 cup of lukewarm water and mix. Use a clean sponge to blot the previously stained area with the water and detergent mixture to remove the oily solvent residue.
